What’s happening with your website?

Choose how to start
Hosting emails can include names and account details. Remove passwords, account numbers and anything you’d rather not share.
No technical knowledge needed. Error messages help, if you have them.
That’s enough to get started. We can’t reliably tell a site’s PHP version from its address, so we check properly during the assessment.
A person reviews every request. No obligation. Prefer to send a message?

A few quick questions

All optional. Choose “I’m not sure” whenever you don’t know.

What broke? Choose any that apply.
Do you have access to your hosting control panel?
Please don’t share login details here. If we need access, we’ll arrange it securely later.

Sound familiar?

“Your hosting provider says your PHP version is outdated.”

→ UPGRADE RESCUE

“You tried upgrading PHP and your website stopped working.”

→ EMERGENCY RESCUE

“Your original developer is no longer available.”

→ LEGACY RESCUE

“You’ve been told your website needs to be rebuilt.”

→ OFTEN IT DOESN’T

In most cases the website itself is fine. What needs updating is the code underneath it, so that it runs on a version of PHP that still gets security fixes.

Three kinds of rescue

01 / UPGRADESite working

PHP Upgrade Rescue

Your site works but runs on an outdated PHP version. We make the code compatible with a supported version, test it on a separate copy, then switch over.

I received a warning →
02 / EMERGENCYSite broken

PHP Emergency Rescue

A PHP upgrade left you with errors, a blank page or features that no longer work. We find the cause and get the site running again.

My site is broken →
03 / LEGACYCustom code

PHP Legacy Rescue

An older custom application with no original developer to call. We review it, update what’s needed for compatibility, and keep what already works.

How it works

  1. 01

    Tell us what’s happening

Share your web address, paste the warning from your host, or describe the problem. No PHP knowledge needed.

  2. 02

    We review

A person looks at what you sent and works out what needs checking.

  3. 03

We recommend a plan and quote

You get the recommended approach, a clear scope and a price, including anything that needs further investigation.

  4. 04

We test and upgrade once agreed

Where feasible, changes are tested on a separate copy before going live. Nothing starts until you approve.

Why PHP Rescue

We only do PHP upgrades. We don’t sell redesigns or need you to move hosts, so there’s no reason for us to recommend more work than your site needs.

Handling your site with care

Backups first

We take a full backup before changing anything.

Tested on a copy

Changes are checked on a separate copy of your site before go-live, wherever feasible.

Confidential access

We never ask for passwords in the enquiry form. If access is needed, we arrange it securely once you’ve agreed to proceed.

Straight answers

If a site can’t be upgraded sensibly, we’ll tell you and explain why.

Questions

Do I need a new website?

Usually not. Most older sites only need the code underneath updated so it runs on a supported version of PHP. Your design, content and hosting stay as they are wherever that is technically feasible. If a rebuild really is the better option, we will tell you why.

Do I have to change hosting providers?

No. In most cases we work with your current host. If your host cannot offer a supported version of PHP at all, we will explain your options.

Will my website go down during the upgrade?

We test the changes on a private copy of your site first, so your live site keeps running while we work. The switch to the new PHP version is planned for a quiet time and usually takes minutes.

What does a PHP upgrade cost?

It depends on how the site is built and what needs updating. After we review your site you get a fixed quote, and no work starts until you approve it.

What if I don’t know my PHP version?

That’s fine. Send us your website address or the email from your host and we will check it during the review. On a WordPress site you can also find it under Tools, Site Health, Info, Server.

Do you upgrade WordPress and WooCommerce sites?

Yes, including sites with lots of plugins and WooCommerce shops. We also work on Joomla, Drupal and custom-built PHP applications.

My site broke after my host changed PHP. What should I do?

Ask your host to switch back to the PHP version you were on before. That usually gets you back online straight away. Then send us a request and we will fix the code properly so the site runs on the newer version.

Do I need to send you my passwords?

No. We never ask for passwords in the enquiry form. Where possible you add us as a user on your site or hosting, so you never share your own login, and you can remove our access when the job is done.
